Lumbar Disc Displacement and Arthritis

What Causes Slipped Lumbar Disc?

A slipped disc can happen for many reasons.

The most common reasons among these are; due to the deterioration of the normal structure of the disc in the aging spine, traffic accidents, and the deterioration of the spine due to falling from a height.

It is the sliding of one bone in front of the other bone.

Besides, it may congenitally occur due to the fact that the bone does not develop properly during the development of the birth canal.

Sometimes, after surgery, one bone can slide forward over the other bone as a result of weakening of the ligaments and joints.

As a result; Leaving aside what the cause is, the spinal cord canal starts to get compressed and the patient may complain of pain and numbness in legs, depending on which nerves it is compressing next to the area where it slipped.

Patients especially complain of low back pain.

Leg pains, numbness, cramps in the legs while walking, and in advanced forms, urinary and stool incontinence are experienced.

Slipped Disc Treatment Modalities

The first thing to do in these patients as treatment is rest.

One of our recommendations for patients whose complaints do not go away with rest is to use a corset.

In patients whose complaints do not go away with corset and rest, further examinations must be performed.

The first thing to do is to determine the degree of displacement along with the x-ray. CT and MRI are advanced radiological methods that will be applied.

When the degree is determined, treatment with non-surgical methods is tried first.

If there is no healing despite all of these, surgical treatment should be planned for patients whose complaints do not go away and for patients with neurological deficit, ie loss of strength in the legs, at the time of admission.

Surgery in Slipped Disc Treatment

During the surgical treatment of lumbar disc displacement, the risk of making a mistake is reduced to almost completely by getting help from the fluoroscopy device.

The aim of surgical treatment is to align the slipped vertebrae as it should be and fix it with screws, to remove the pressure on the nerves and to prevent the vertebrae from slipping again.

The screws used during surgery are also called platinum. Since these screws are titanium, they do not pose an allergy risk.

Throughout the surgery, the transmission of the nerves that erupt the spinal cord and go to the legs is observed by a device called Neuromonitorization. Thus, all kinds of problems that may affect the nerve roots during the operation are tried to be prevented.

What is Osteoarthritis?

In people after a certain age, some degenerations begin in the discs first.

Bone protrusions are formed, the liquid content of the disc decreases, the disc height disappears.

Omurga Kireçlenmesi

This condition is actually a part of the aging process, it is seen in almost everyone. In other words, it would not be wrong to say that almost all of the elderly people have more or less low back calcification.

Low back pain, limitation of movement, leg pain, loss of strength are the most important symptoms.

What Should We Do to Prevent Arthritis?

  • Avoiding excessive and sudden movements
  • Exercising regularly and softly
  • Supporting the aching area with a corset
  • To lose and reduce weight
